Mexico’s U-23 Olympic squad and the Mexican league’s lastest addition, Leon, drew 1-1 in El Tri’s send-off to the summer games.

Mexico U-23: Corona; Jimenez (Vidrio 70’); Mier; Reyes (Araujo 70’); Chavez; Herrera (Enríquez 66’); Salcido; Aquino; Ponce (Cortes 66’); Fabian (Jimenez al 72’); Peralta (Dos Santos 73’)

Leon: Yarbrough; Burbano (Vazquez 46’); Hernandez; Montes; Rojas; Magallon; Loboa (Santibáñez 82’); Maz (Muñoz 74’); Peña (Calderón 64’); Arce (Britos 64’); González.

The U-23 squad played their last game on Mexican land before heading to Europe for a few more preparation games.

The score remained even at the break but finally changed minutes into the second half. Jesus Corona made a save in the 58th minute that led to a counterattack from the Mexican team. Aquino took the shot, but was unable to send it to the back of the net. Seconds later Othoniel Arce took advantage of a misplaced Corona to score in the 60th minute for Leon’s 1-0 lead.

Giovani Dos Santos was brought down in the 81st minute and called for a penalty but none was given.

Mexico equalized in the 88th minute with a goal from Aquino. The shot passed close to the post before rippling the back of the net.

  1. Leon seemed to really call the pace of game. They played much faster. On a good note Javier Aquino seems outstanding on the flank, super quick, nice foot skill…really wanna see him take over Pablo Barreras spot. Also Carlos salcido and oribe Peralta didn’t do enough for me in the game. Jorge enriquez should of started the game…wins every ball, fights for every ball, pin point passing. Marco Fabian had an ok game. And the back line seemed strong but out of place at some moments. Corona to me had a stellar game. Can’t wait for the next game

    1. I think Enriquez should have been on earlier since he seems to really help drive the team when he plays. They’re still learning to incorporate the new players, so things should improve within the next few games. I do like Corona as a reinforcement. Although the U-23 goalkeepers have done fine, Corona can really make the saves when needed.

  2. Man, I watched the whole game on Telefutura and the first thing that I told my girlfriend was, “At least in this game there aren’t going to be any ‘booing’ or throwing of things at the Mexican players.” What do they do? Prove me wrong. Mexico were under-performing this game, but like Roger said, we can expect a better game against England and Spain (I hope)!
