Chances for Azteca rivalry looking slim

Mexico is undefeated when playing the USA at Estadio Azteca (Carlos Ruiz)

Earlier in 2012 USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann made a statement (via Twitter) that the USA would be facing off against Mexico in August. Not only would they face off in Mexico, but at the mecca of Mexican football…the Azteca. Football sources around the web also confirmed the clash between the two rivals. Yet within the past month it looks like the U.S. no longer recognizes the match, and the FMF was hesitant to ever speak on the game.

So for fans of both squads it looks like 2014 qualifying will be the next time these top CONCACAF sides go head-to-head. The previous result (August 2011) was a 1-1 draw in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mexico has an overall record against the USA of 33-12-15 (W-T-L), and is 23-1-0 in Mexico.

  1. Not to show off or anything, but mexico is now in another level of football, usa has not moved on in getting into a higher level of football.

    1. It would have been an interesting friendly but somewhat pointless. They will meet next year when it really counts. I think Mexico could show how scary they can be when on all cylinders against Bosnia (and missing many good players in the Toulon tournament).

      1. I agree with u Bryan. Mexico is gonna be able to display just how good they are at the world stage. And many of our youth stars are away in France. Marco Fabian has been out of this world at the tournament an he may be tapping on Giovani Dos Sanos shoulder for a starting position. The USA game would of been an easy game, Mexico has moved past them at a playing level and even with our 23 years we could prolly beat their “A” team.
